From the Builder

“What kind of bicycle do I specialize in?  Anything with knobs that touches dirt.”

My Pledge

Made in the USA.  That’s right: Each 44 Bikes® frame is built right from my shop here in New England. I take tremendous pride in the fact that each one is made by hand in the USA from U.S. sourced materials whenever possible. I don’t choose fly by night operations; only the finest craftsmen are employed for component, material, paint / finishing work. Whenever possible, I spec only OEM’s that make their components in these great 50 states. Your frame is guaranteed for the life of the rider. Rest assured that if something does happen, you’re covered. RIDE each one with pride.

My Mission

My name is Kristofer Henry and my mission is to build each bicycle to the best of my ability.  I utilize the finest U.S. sourced materials whenever possible and work tirelessly with each and every client to deliver the ultimate trail machine. That’s a tall order but it’s a challenge I take on with pride and eager readiness. It’s very important to me that I use materials sourced locally, partner with US based OEM’s, manufacturers and fellow craftsman.  Take the oath: Swear to Shred.

About the Builder

Kristofer Eric Henry · Owner
The story of 44 Bikes for me starts in High School when I purchased my first mountain bike. I saved up for months and had my dad take me over to Trexlertown, PA. Just beside the Velodrome, there was a bike shop (T-Town Cycles) fully stocked with more bikes than I had ever seen before-just dripping with 90’s neon and anodized in a multitude of color. That new bike smell saturated the air inside. I came out of there with a brand new set of wheels: A Neon Yellow w/ Black Paint Splattered Trek 830 Antelope. That thing took me everywhere. The hook was firmly set.

From those early days riding as a kid for the first time around the block to my first real mountain bike, and to the ride I just went on yesterday, one constant has remained: There’s nothing finer than riding a bicycle. The path you choose and the experience of the trail is unlike any other feeling. Needless to say, all of my passion, experience and creativity is funneled directly into 44 Bikes.

I split time now between running two endeavors: 44 Bikes and the Department of Shred which is a small design agency specializing in Product and Graphic Design. At DOS, I don’t always have the ability to design the way I would prefer: design and build. Most projects have to stay in the virtual world where I sketch, formalize and oversee production. 44 allows me to draw on years of experience and enable me to channel that into building bicycles. It really lets my mind relax and realize something completely different. My grand father was a TIG welder so it’s in my blood. I absolutely love working with metal. Its a demanding medium that commands your attention and puts your process to the test. 44 Bikes represents that chance to realize ambitions, experiment with materials and put talent to good use. Its an outlet for creativity, aspirations and craft. Form and function converge as one.

One last note: I encourage everyone to ride their bicycle each and every day. Set out on new adventures and take the path less traveled. You never know what lies for you just around the bend or at the top of the next hill. Hopefully in the near future, you and I will be able to share that experience or that grind to the top. Bicycles certainly bring us all together. Thanks for stopping by.

For those who are interested, I have been “Smoked Out” on Velocipede Salon. You can read that on-going story HERE. I also have a pretty extensive thread on The Garage Journal of the 44 Shop Build Out. You can read the full thread and on-going story/developments HERE.

Thinking about placing an order?

You’ve done your homework and have been pouring over the details. It’s time to order your bicycle. It’s quite simple!

0. Base price for ALL bicycle frames is $1850.00 (USD). This includes signature 44 shaped chainstays, 2 water bottle bosses, curved bridges, and stainless head and seat tube badges (ST Badge stamped with your lucky number). Frame only purchases see a $200 consumables charge – this does not apply when a complete is purchased. A list of pricing options can be found here.

1. Email me directly: khenry@44bikes.com or call me in the studio, 9-5pm EST: 603-654-2005 to begin the process of your build. At this time, please provide me with information regarding what type of bicycle you are envisioning, what you will be using it for, options you’re thinking about and whether this will be a frame only, frame/fork, complete, etc. Please be aware that my phone and internet are NOT located in the shop (they are located in my studio). If you call and I am not available, please leave your name, a phone number and when a good time / day to return your call. When the torch has cooled, I’ll be sure to return your phone call or email you as soon as possible.

2. From this initial discussion, you enter a verbal agreement with 44 Bikes to get on the build list. A $500 deposit is required and represents your commitment to your bicycle project. This is a big step of trust and if we cannot take each others word, then we should not be doing business as builder and client. It’s that simple. I will give you an estimated date when it will be your turn at the time you decide to join the build list.

3. Fast forward 2 weeks before it’s your turn in the build list. I will contact you to gather all necessary specs, fit measurements and have a detailed discussion about your build. From this conversation, I will generate an initial frame drawing, a quote for your frame and a quote for any components you are ordering. Once all are approved, I require a 50% deposit on your bicycle frame and 100% down on any components. The remaining balance is due upon completion – no exceptions. The Fedex, UPS, USPS tracking number is your reciept that your build has left 44HQ and is on it’s way. I also set up a Dropbox folder for you at the start of your build and upload images of the build process from start to finish on a daily basis. It’s a personalized journey between you and your bicycle as it takes shape!
